Early NZ Members of PMI, USA.
Prior to charter of PMINZ in April 1994

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the chartering of the Project Management Institute of New Zealand, it is interesting to peruse the archives of PMI NZ and note that at least 48 Project Managers, who were living and working in New Zealand at the time of their joining, were members of PMI-USA prior to the chartering of PMI NZ in April 1994.

The names of these current and former members are listed here as an acknowledgement of the contribution they have made to the establishment of the profession of project management within NZ, and the chartering of PMINZ.

Brian Doyle was the first recorded New Zealander to have joined PMI-USA in June 1978, some 26 years ago. His membership number was 3601, a decidedly low number, given the phenomenal membership growth of PMI internationally to over 137,000 members this year. Should Brian read this item, or if any reader knows of Brian, please advise the Secretary (refer to contact details below).

Possibly up to a further 10 people may have been members of PMI-USA before PMINZ was chartered. If you know of any additional names or similarly, if you know the correct first names of the foregoing former and current members, and their present whereabouts, please advise the Secretary, so that the PMINZ records may be updated for archive purposes and published later in PM Forum.

At the time of charter, many of the early members were engaged in the capital development and construction industry. However, over recent years the membership demographics have swung in favour of the IT industry, together with a good representation from all sectors of Government, Local Government, and the business world. The current membership of PMINZ comprises 1,000 members.

Since the charter of PMINZ in April 1994, two of our members have held international office, including positions on the international Board of PMI – Stephen Harrison (two 3 year terms completed) and Iain Fraser (current board member). This is indeed an unprecedented achievement for a Chapter which is relatively small and relatively young, and speaks volumes of the calibre of project management within NZ. We appreciate and acknowledge the high level of professional and personal commitment which Stephen and Iain have made to the advancement of the project management profession, both within NZ and internationally.

Phil Heaphy, Secretary PMINZ
